About us

Hohai University is a state key university under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education of China. It is a comprehensive university with research and study of water resources as its main focus, education of engineering subjects as its first priority, and coordinated development of a wide array of disciplines covering engineering, science, economics, management, liberal arts, and law.

The history of HHU can be traced back to Hohai Civil Engineering School, which was founded in 1915 and was the first institution focusing on research and education of water resources in China. Now it has become one of the universities on China’s state “Project 211” and one of the 56 universities in China with graduate schools.

 

Hohai University has three campuses, covering a total area of 132 hectares. The Downtown campus, covering 45 hectares, is located at the northern foot of Qingliang Hill featuring a beautiful landscape. Jiangning campus, 57.6 hectares in size, is located in Jiangning Economic Development Zone in the suburb of Nanjing. Changzhou campus occupies an area of 30 hectares in the High-tech Development Zone of Changzhou City.

 

The University consists of 17 colleges and schools, one state key research center, one state key laboratory, 14 key laboratories and engineering research centers at the ministerial or provincial level. Hohai University offers 7 post-doctorate programs, 38 Doctor's programs, 124 Master's programs, 18 Engineering Master's Programs and MBA, and 50 Bachelor's programs. The specialties and disciplines in the field of hydrology and water resources, hydraulic and hydropower engineering, and civil engineering are among the strongest in China, with the discipline of hydraulic engineering the best in China. The faculty and graduates of     Hohai University have been extensively and heavily involved in the research, design, construction, and management of some of the worldwide-known engineering projects such as the “Yangtze River Three Gorges Project”, the “South-to-North Water Transfer Project”, and “the Yellow River Xiaolangdi Project”.

 

Hohai University has a student population of over 33,000, including over 9,000 graduate students and more than 20,000 undergraduate students. There are over 3,000 staff members, among whom there are one full-time academician on the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 13 adjunct academicians, and more than 900 professors and associate professors. More than 200 professors are qualified to supervise Ph.D students.

 

Internationalization has always been one of the most important strategies of Hohai University. Hohai has developed extensive international exchange and cooperation with partners around the world. In addition, Hohai is one of the first universities in China approved by the State Council to confer Doctor's, Master's and Bachelor's degrees to international students.

 

The university will achieve a higher goal to build itself into a multi-disciplined, high-level research university of significant international prestige, with world-class disciplines in water resources and strength in other disciplines.
